Is soaking clay tile necessary before installation?
Soaking tile before installation is not recommended and can temporarily alter its appearance.
Is soaking clay tile necessary before installation?
No. We do not recommend soaking any Clay Imports tile before installation. Fully submerging tile in water is unnecessary and can temporarily alter its appearance.
Why don’t we recommend soaking tile?
Clay and ceramic tiles can absorb moisture through their unglazed sides and back. Fully soaking a loose tile can saturate the tile body and may:
- Exaggerate surface crazing or fine hairline cracks in the glaze
- Temporarily darken or discolor the tile
- Create a misleading impression of how the tile will look or perform once properly installed
These effects are generally cosmetic, but soaking a loose tile does not replicate normal installed conditions.
What happens after installation?
Once properly installed with the appropriate mortar, grout, waterproofing, and sealant where needed, tile is not exposed to water in the same way as a loose tile submerged on all sides.
Some crazing and variation may naturally occur over time, particularly with traditional glazes and handmade clay tile. This is a characteristic of the material and does not affect the structural integrity of the tile.
Is soaking tile a good way to test its performance?
No. Submerging an uninstalled tile in water is not a reliable test of its long-term performance. For installation, care, and suitability questions, we recommend following the installation guidelines for your specific tile and application.
