What Grout Joint Width Should I Use For My Tile?

We'll go over what grout joint size is right for each type of tile

In this article, we will provide our recommended grout widths for different types of tiles.

The actual thickness of the grout joint may vary from the recommendations below due to the size of the tile and the amount of size variation. The size of the grout joint is crucial for both the appearance and wear of the tile. It is not advisable to use a grout joint less than 1/8", with the exception of Zellige, when installing tiles. For floors and showers, it is recommended to use wider grout lines to enhance traction and prevent slipping.

When considering the width of the grout, it is important to understand that narrower grout joints will make the natural variation of the tile more noticeable. Using wider grout joints can help with tile placement and maintaining straight lines. It also reduces the slope between tiles. Larger grout joints are often used in traditional tile installations to highlight the tile, while smaller grout joints can create a more contemporary and modern look.

Grout Width Recommendations

Natural Terracotta – 1/4" to 3/4"

Speciality Terracotta (Cotto, D'Hanis, Organic) – 1/4” to 3/4”

Glazed Terracotta – 1/4” to 5/8” joint recommended
Grout joint spacing for Saltillo tile can vary from 1/4” to 3/4”; for tiles 6” and below, narrower joints generally produce a more modern aesthetic, while larger joint widths are suited for larger tile sizes creating a traditional look.

Glazed Thin Brick – 1/4” to 1/2” joint recommended

The grout spacing for Glazed Thin Brick can range from 1/4" to 1/2". This range ensures that the spacing and scale of your installation remain visually balanced.

Zellige
– 1/16” to 1/8” joint recommended
If you opt for a minimal grout spacing of 1/16"-1/8", the surface will have a slightly imperfect but appealing texture. When tiles are placed flush against each other, it creates a unique and artisanal appearance. Increasing the size of the grout joint, however, will give your installation a more traditional look.

Pool Waterline
– 1/8” to 1/2”
Grout spacing for clay tile can range from 1/8" to 1/2". When working with clay tiles, it is important to consider the size variation. A smaller grout joint can lead to uneven grout lines, so opting for larger grout lines can make the installation process easier.

Clay Tile (Solid, Talavera, Patterned Clay) – 1/8” to 3/8” joint recommended
We recommend between 1/8”-1/4" grout joint for rectified tiles, due to a natural variation in size. An additional deviation of ± 1/4" is considered acceptable for joint straightness and variation of flatness.

Final Thoughts | Installation Appearance

It is recommended to discuss the desired grout joints with the designer or installer before setting the tiles. Properly spacing the tiles and choosing the appropriate grouting material will result in a beautiful tile installation that will stand the test of time.

The width of finished grout lines can range from 1/16" to 3/16", depending on the tile. However, when using 3/16" spacers, the actual finished grout spacing will vary from 1/8" to 1/4". If smaller spacers, such as 1/8", are used, it will accentuate the size difference of handmade tiles.

If you decide to use smaller grout joints than our recommend width, which we do not advise, we suggest adding an additional 5% overage. This is in addition to the recommended 15-20% overage that we suggest. It's important to note that opting for the smallest grout joint possible will increase the time required for installation.
