What sets each type of Specialty Terracotta apart?

For specialty terracotta options, we have Organic Terracotta, Cotto, and D'Hanis, which are various types of terracotta.

Our specialty terracotta collection features 3 types of terracotta, Organic TerracottaCotto, and D'Hanis. These specialty items are all composed of various types of clay. They typically have less color variation and have different characteristics for texture, sealant, and overall look.

Organic Terracotta

Organic Terracotta is our most down-to-earth and humble type of terracotta. It is sustainably crafted using eco-friendly materials, including clay, water, and fire. This type of terracotta has a rustic and weathered appearance, making it perfect for those who desire an authentically handcrafted look. The tiles have a slightly consistent shade of orange with more saturated honey tones. They are smooth to the touch but may have distinctive "imperfections" such as minor chipping, small hairline cracks, and distressing. Organic terracotta is our most varied tile and will naturally develop a patina over time, resulting in deepened color variation. We offer a limited range of sizes and shapes for this type of terracotta. It comes unsealed and requires sealing during installation.

Cotto

Cotto terracotta tiles come in three distinct colors: red, gold, and brown. Each color has slight variations in tone, creating a natural and textured space. These tiles are versatile and suitable for various areas. Cotto tiles are denser because of the use of machinery. Cotto tiles are denser than Saltillo tiles and can be fired at a higher temperature. However, due to their rough texture, they tend to collect more dirt and require regular cleaning. They are excellent for exterior and wet areas as they have a rough, slip-resistant texture. Although Cotto terracotta is less varied in color, it still has natural variations that add to its charm. It comes unsealed and does not require sealing, however, if sealed, only high-quality penetrating sealers should be used on Cotto. Cotto tiles are available in various shapes and sizes.

D'Hanis

D'Hanis terracotta is a type of terracotta that offers a more predictable and consistent look. Generally, D'Hanis tiles are more refined compared to Saltillo tiles. They have a flatter and smoother surface and exhibit less variation in color and sheen. Additionally, D'Hanis Red Terracotta tiles feature ridged edges and corners that are minimally tumbled to reduce the risk of chipping. This style was popularized during the Mid-Century Modern design era and is known for its refined yet organic appearance, highlighted by a vibrant red hue. It is important to note that some variation in shade and texture is normal for D'Hanis terracotta tiles, and it is actually part of what gives them their uniquely rustic and authentic look. These tiles are available in a variety of shapes and sizes and come pre-sealed with a satin finish.
